Universal appeal

SPAIN, Madrid. Barracuda Yacht Design has revealed two concepts created for Istanbul-based Mengi Yay Yachts. The brief required a 40m sailing yacht as well as a 31m version — the former of which is presented here — with a well-balanced hull and an exterior that would not only offer universal appeal but would "survive the test of time".

“Turkey’s increased reputation for building high quality aluminium yachts meant we were only too pleased when Mengi Yay Yachts contacted us,” says principal designer at the studio Iñigo Toledo. “These had to be practical designs that could be built in a relatively uncomplicated and cost-conscious way.”

The Spaniard goes on to reveal that the designs were achieved with multiuse in mind, making it possible to transform cabins from doubles to twins and vice versa. In creating spaces that feature common materials, components and fittings, the studio has significantly reduced production costs.

The interior offers accommodation for 10 guests across three double en suites and two twin en suites. The owner’s full-beam mastersuite is located aft of the vessel and includes access to a private terrace and swim platform. “It is a signature feature of the design,” comments Toledo. Rear facing patio doors and large hull windows either side of the suite offer the owner uninterrupted views out to sea.

“Both designs share performance orientated attributes including, for example, maximum waterline length hull forms, balanced rudders and deep bulb keels with variable draft centreboards,” says the designer. The designs benefit from full carbon rigs and flexible sail plans, as well as self-tacking jibs and large overlapping genoas and furling booms.

Ease of crew duties is further enhanced with the noise dampened engine room split into a hot and cold area. The latter of which includes a monitoring station allowing an engineer to check all systems on board in comfort. With a cruising speed of 12 knots, the Mengi Yay 40m benefits from a single 894kW engine, two 100kW generators and a further single 40kW generator.

Forward of the vessel are crew quarters, the galley and crew mess, above which is the main salon, with a tender stowed beneath the foredeck. A 1.5m deep storage space for deck furniture and toys can be found in lazarette lockers situated underneath the terrace aft.
