World’s largest sailing yacht White Pearl launches

White Pearl, the 147 metre sailing superyacht currently in build at at German yard Nobiskrug, has just launched and is set to claim title of "world's largest sailing yacht" when she's completed next year.

The build of White Pearl has been shrouded in secrecy and whispered in murmurs, but with her technical launch we can learn a little from aerial photos of her in the water. It's obvious from the photos that there is still much work to be done before she is completed, but White Pearl isn't due for delivery until 2016.

The first photos of the top-secret build surfaced in March, giving us a sneak peek at the gargantuan project. Thew new aerial images clearly show the size of this massive sailing yacht, which was originally reported by Boat International three years ago when construction began in 2012. Due to the secrecy of the build, not many more details are clear now than were known then, but White Pearl is said to be a three-masted sailing yacht built to a modern design. She will be constructed in steel and aluminium.

No official renderings of drawings of the yacht have been published thus far, so these photos of White Pearl are a welcome visual aid, providing a sneak preview to how this sizeable superyacht will shape up.

White Pearl is speculated to be commissioned by the owner of the iconic superyacht A, Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

Currently the largest sailing yacht on the water is 96.35 metre Sea Cloud, a classic beauty launched in 1931, followed by the modern falcon-rigged iconic yacht Maltese Falcon at 88 metres LOA. White Pearl will handily surpass both of these.

Other large sailing yachts in build include 141 metre Dream Symphony, in build at the Dream Ship Victory yard in Turkey to a design by Ken Freivokh and naval architecture by Dykstra, and 105 metre Solar, underway at Oceanco, designed by Nuvolari-Lenard with naval architecture by Dykstra as well. The latest large sailing yacht to launch is the 85 metre Oceanco and Vitters collaboration.
