Ocean Signal lights up Seawork

Long term Seawork exhibitor Ocean Signal, launched a new signal distress flare at the exhibition this year which it said is the smallest and most powerful on the market.

The rescueME EDF1 electronic distress flare offers users a safe and long-lasting solution to visual signalling in an emergency. It can be used in addition to pyrotechnics on board a commercial vessel and in place of them on a leisure craft.

Unlike single use pyrotechnic flares the rescueME EDF1 can be used repeatedly in any of its four modes, ensuring continued visibility is maintained over a longer period. The unit is both safe to store and operate while also eliminating any worries associated with disposal.

Colin Greetham, Ocean Signal, told Maritime Journal: “The unit is small enough and safe enough to carry on the person.”

The unique lens design combined with the use of advanced LEDs and highly efficient circuit technology ensures a constant level of light output throughout the life of the user replaceable battery.

The light output is a beam of over 30° throughout the full 360° azimuth, providing in excess of 6 times more light coverage than other electronic flares*. Light is also distributed throughout the hemisphere above the unit to ensure visibility from the air.

In the economy mode the unit will continue to operate for six hours and even on full capacity for 1.5 hours. On a clear night it has a seven mile range thanks to angled LEDs

The compact size and rugged design means the rescueME EDF1 is the perfect safety product for a grab bag, life raft or hiker’s backpack.

Also on display at Seawork this year was the rest of the Ocean Signal portfolio including the rescueME MOB1, S100 SART, V100 VHF and E100G EPIRB.

Another new addition to the range is the award-winning rescueME MOB1, which forms part of the Ocean Signal product portfolio developed to meet the needs of all commercial shipping, offshore industries and fishing sectors and designed to operate in the harshest marine conditions.

Being able to integrate easily into even the most compact life jackets, the rescueME MOB1 provides commercial workers and crew with the reassurance that they can be located quickly and recovered in the event of a man overboard situation.

Once the rescueME MOB1 is activated, AIS transmissions provide accurate position information on the vessel’s chart plotter. The plotter will show a red circle plus longitude, latitude, and distance and bearing to the person in distress. In addition, the DSC VHF alarm will also be triggered. The integrated strobe light with moulded lens ensures the survivor can be seen easily in poor light conditions.

At 30% smaller than other similar products, the lightweight rescueME MOB1 measures just 134mm (height) by 38mm (width) by 27mm (depth) and weighs 90g.
