Floating office project takes shape in Gothenburg
SF Marina has delivered the floating foundation for a new office building at Dockepiren in Eriksberg, Gothenburg, Sweden. Two concrete pontoons, manufactured at the company’s facility in Wallhamn, have now been towed into the Port of Gothenburg, where they will support construction of the building.
Planned across two storeys with a rooftop level, the office building will comprise 550 square metres. It has been designed by Nordström Kelly and will be constructed by Hansson & Söner.
The development highlights how floating concrete structures can be used for permanent commercial buildings in waterfront locations where available land is limited. Because the floating foundation and the building can be prepared separately, parts of the construction process can also be carried out more efficiently before installation on site.
“This project shows how floating concrete structures can be used for permanent commercial buildings in locations where land is limited and the waterfront setting is an important part of the site’s value,” says Lina Odhe of SF Marina.
With the pontoons now delivered, the project enters its next phase as construction of the building begins on top of the floating foundation.
The development also demonstrates how SF Marina’s concrete pontoons can support a wider range of permanent waterfront applications beyond traditional marinas and harbours.
The project also builds on Hansson & Söner’s experience of constructing buildings on floating foundations. One well-known example is Salt & Sill on Klädesholmen, Sweden’s first floating hotel, which rests on pontoons from SF Marina.
The floating office building is expected to be completed in October 2026.
