Superyachts have long been considered serious climate polluters due to diesel consumption and wastewater production, however, with the oceans now facing significant threats, the industry is riding the wave of technological innovation and green initiatives at an unprecedented pace to reduce its environmental impact.
We are in the midst of a boom in sustainable yachting, with yacht builders and design studios conceiving a series of new concepts that are shaping a greener future without compromising on luxury and comfort. Edvin H Design, a Dutch multidisciplinary design studio specializing in product, architecture and yacht design, has just released renderings of a groundbreaking eco-yacht powered by solar and wave energy that promises to cruise the oceans without burning fossil fuels.
Dubbed Awakening, the new 80m (262.4ft) superyacht concept aims to revolutionize the technological and aesthetic horizon of luxury eco-yachts through its innovative solar system that blends automotive aesthetics.
Its deep blue exterior and streamlined, extended lines seem to blend into the water and the horizon, giving the yacht a sleek, flawless beauty. In addition, its huge size and wide, tiered decks create a spectacular silhouette on the water.
In particular, the yacht's environmentally friendly features are cleverly integrated into every detail of its design. Solar panels are cleverly integrated into the retractable awnings, support columns, and the roof of the whirlpool on the sun deck, and there is an innovative stern swim platform designed to capture the ocean's wave energy and turn natural forces into the yacht's forward power.
The environmentally friendly concept also extends to other corners of the yacht, such as the owner's deck, which is conceived as a semi-enclosed workspace and is equipped with a table carved from natural stone and a built-in tablet powered by solar energy, which not only highlights the environmental protection concept but also does not lose the convenience and elegance of modern technology.
The foredeck further enhances the ship's green label. Called the "Solar City" by the designers, this outdoor space features a relaxation area with sunbeds under the solar panel array. Energy from solar panels integrated into the solar canopy powers the entertainment system, which includes a deck-integrated projector and a huge TV screen.
Meanwhile, the yacht’s sun deck has been designed as a luxurious wellness space with four solar-powered bathtubs and whirlpools. The space, which is accessed via a central internal staircase, also includes a central sauna, allowing passengers to de-stress and relax.
The ship’s galley is also powered by solar energy. Rather than a simple galley, the cooking space is a teppanyaki kitchen located on the main deck, drawing power from solar panels stored in the awning. Renderings of the cooking space have not yet been released, but the designers say it has a modern look and uses luxurious materials such as copper-spaced glass panels, natural stone and stainless steel.
The needs of adventurous owners have not been neglected either, as the yacht’s lower deck is home to a wide range of toys, from electric mountain bikes to solar-powered tenders and jet skis, offering endless possibilities for passionate sporting activities.
The design of the side hatch is even more unique, with a swimming platform extending to the water surface. This design not only ensures the stability and safety of the solar tender during docking, but also provides great convenience for guests to re-board after swimming.
As the concept of environmental protection becomes more and more popular in the field of luxury yachts, the "Awakening" has undoubtedly become a model of innovation and sustainable development. It proves that without sacrificing the luxury and comfort pursued by the superyacht world, we can still coexist harmoniously with nature and jointly write a green and beautiful sailing legend.
