STORM Sim has developed e-learning module "Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats"

STORM SIM has developed a new e-learning module (ELM) “Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats” in accordance with the latest edition of IMO Model Course 1.23.

ELM takes into account changes in international standards made during twenty years after the adoption of the previous edition of IMO Model Course 1.23 “Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats”, with regard to:

STCW Convention (training and certification),

SOLAS, LSA Code (requirements for life-saving appliances),

IAMSAR (search and rescue operations at sea),

symbols used (MSS - Mandatory Safety action Signs, relating to life-saving appliances),

performance requirements for survival craft radiotelephone apparatus,

performance requirements for search and rescue locating devices

and other matters within the scope of the model course.

ELM content is aligned with the curriculum of the training course, which is present in 2024 Model course edition. In accordance with the new requirements, the training content has been increased in the topics concerning methods of helicopter rescue, the use of radio equipment on board a survival craft, and some other matters, connected with the use of life-saving appliances.

At the same time, according to IMO recommendations, the following provisions have been removed from the training materials:

use of satellite EPIRB working on 1.6 GHz and VHF EPIRB, taking into account the fact that these services had been discontinued,

some first aid techniques to avoid duplication with other model courses,

and other matters that are not of significant practical importance.
