What Are Yacht Legs and When Do You Need Them?

If you’ve ever seen a yacht sitting upright on a beach or sandbank and wondered, “How is that not tipping over?” — the answer is probably Yacht Legs.

At The Yacht Leg & Cradle Company, we get asked about these all the time. Whether you're cruising tidal waters or just want more freedom when anchoring, yacht legs can be a game-changer. Here's what they are and when you might want to use them.

What Are Yacht Legs?

Yacht legs (also called drying-out legs, beaching legs) are removable supports that attach to either side of your yacht's hull. Their job? Keep your boat standing upright when the tide goes out and your keel hits the seabed.

Instead of leaning over awkwardly — or worse, risking damage — your yacht stays balanced and stable. Think of them like giving your boat a set of sturdy training wheels when it’s on land.

When Would You Use Yacht Legs?

Here are some common situations where yacht legs come in handy:

Tidal Harbors & Anchorages: If you're cruising around areas like the UK, Brittany, or the Netherlands, drying out is often part of the boating lifestyle.

DIY Maintenance: Need to clean your hull or check your prop? Beaching your yacht can be a practical (and cost-saving) alternative to a haul-out.

Remote Exploration: Want to tuck into a quiet creek or sandy cove? Legs let you settle upright when the tide drops, without needing marina facilities.

Mooring on Drying Pontoons: In some marinas, boats are left to rest on mud or sand at low tide. Legs give peace of mind that you won’t end up sideways.

Do All Yachts Need Them?

Not necessarily. If your boat lives in deep water all year or never ventures into tidal areas, you might not need yacht legs at all.

But if you do cruise anywhere with significant tide movement, they’re a smart investment. We always say: better to have them and not need them, than the other way around!

Are They Easy to Fit?

Yes! Our Yacht legs are designed to be strong, adjustable, and user-friendly. They easily attach to dedicated fittings on your hull, and can be installed or removed quickly. We offer both standard sizes and custom builds to suit different boat types and cruising needs. For this you would need to contact us directly, and we can go through your options.
