Key Ergonomic Design Points for the Marine Azimuth Control Lever

The ergonomic design of the marine azimuth control lever must address vibration, vessel motion, wet and slippery conditions, and gloved operation. Its core objective is to achieve precise, safe, and fatigue-free control in all sea states.

1. Handle Form and Grip
1)Use a non-slip surface texture and select thermally insulating, corrosion-resistant composite materials.
2)All control element spacing shall be dimensioned for hands wearing thick gloves to prevent inadvertent actuation.
3)Recommended handle diameter is 30–45 mm. Provide a palm support platform to stabilize force application during vessel motions.
-------------------
2. Control Action and Logic
1)Azimuth control shall follow the “hand follows vessel” principle: pushing the lever forward corresponds to the bow moving straight ahead; rotation is synchronized with the azimuth angle. Reverse mapping is strictly prohibited.
2)The centre position must have a distinct, vibration-resistant positive detent with a noticeable “capture” feel to avoid a “false neutral”.
3)Travel damping shall increase smoothly. A friction lock may be provided to hold the set command (speed hold), equipped with an emergency kick-off release.
-------------------
3. Tactile Feedback and Environmental Adaptability
1)The internal structure shall be vibration-isolated so that no high-frequency tingling vibration is transmitted to the grip area.
2)A clear mechanical detent with an audible click must be felt and heard when passing through critical positions such as neutral and full speed.
-------------------
3)Materials shall be resistant to salt spray and UV radiation. Ingress protection of the panel shall be no less than IP56, with sealed electronic parts meeting IP67.
-------------------
4. Visual Indication
1)Azimuth and thrust scales shall have adjustable red or blue-white backlighting suitable for night navigation.
2)Transparent covers and panels shall be treated with an anti-glare finish.
-------------------
5. Redundancy and Emergency
1)Retain the capability for purely mechanical control of azimuth direction and clutch in the event of system failure. The operating torque shall be within the limits for sustained single-person operation.
