How to Select the Signal Output of an Azimuth Control Lever? An Analysis of the Gear-Coupled Potentiometer Solution
The azimuth control lever directly affects manoeuvring precision and reliability. The signal output scheme is one of the most easily overlooked yet critical aspects during selection.
1. Common Signal Output Schemes
1)Hall sensor: no mechanical wear, long service life, but higher cost and sensitive to electromagnetic environment.
2)Encoder output: digital signal, high precision, easy to integrate with digital systems, but relatively high cost.
3)Potentiometer output: mature technology, moderate cost, good linearity, strong anti-interference capability, and the most widely used solution in marine control systems.

2. Advantages of the Gear-Coupled Potentiometer
Compared with directly driven potentiometers, the gear-coupled structure offers the following features:
1)Higher precision: the gear ratio amplifies angular displacement, improving signal resolution.
2)Longer service life: the gear train shares torque load, reducing direct wear on the potentiometer shaft.
3)Adjustable operating feel: damping and return-to-center feel can be optimised for improved operational comfort.
4)Stable signal output: reduced transmission backlash results in more linear output, suitable for frequent ahead/astern operations and fine adjustments.

3. Selection Recommendations by Vessel Type
1)Tugs and harbour craft: frequent hard-over manoeuvres; priority should be given to the gear-coupled potentiometer solution for its signal stability and impact resistance.
2)Offshore vessels and wind farm service vessels: prolonged DP operations; an analog potentiometer lever combined with a signal conversion module may be selected. If budget allows, encoder or Hall sensor solutions can be considered.
3)Inland electric vessels: lower voltage platform and simpler electromagnetic environment; analog potentiometer output is easy to match with electric propulsion controllers, offering a clear cost advantage.
