From ARC 2025 to Antarctica — A Remarkable Voyage with R53XS, Picomole
Video: Aldo Fumagalli recounts how Picomole is evolving from trans-Atlantic racer to a bold Antarctic journey — and previews plans for a new, even larger trimaran.
Just days before the start of the 2025 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) (which they went on to win!), Picomole’s owner and skipper, Aldo Fumagalli, joined a candid interview on YouTube’s FareVela channel to reflect on Picomole’s trans-Atlantic history — and to outline the extraordinary voyage ahead.
In the interview, Aldo traces his long-standing love for the ARC: from humble beginnings as a non-sailor boat owner to repeatedly racing across the Atlantic with friends aboard various boats, culminating in the 53XS.
Now, with Picomole’s ARC exploits behind them, the crew is charting a new course: navigating from the Caribbean down through Latin America, all the way to the southern tip of the world. The next destination: the waters near the Antarctic Peninsula — including the South Shetlands and Deception Point — for an unforgettable polar sailing adventure, aboard the same Rapido 53XS.
At the same time, Aldo hints at ambitious new plans: a larger, high-performance trimaran of about 60 ft. It will be built to embrace the same spirit of endurance, exploration and innovation that defines the Rapido family.
This article captures not just a boat’s journey, but the soul of a sailor driven by curiosity and passion — from the Canary Islands to the edge of Antarctica.
