Dutch general cargo vessel operator ForestWave reported that pirates abducted 12 of the 14 crew members from the freighter FWN Rapide in the Gulf of Guinea. The 2 other crew members are reported safe.
The company have since released the following statement: “ForestWave would like to stress its main priority is to establish contact with the missing seafarers and secure their earliest and secure return. The company’s Emergency Response team is working around the clock and is liaising with the local and international authorities. ForestWave together with its local organisations are in close contact with the families of the valued seafarers to support them in these difficult times,”.
The International Maritime Bereau (IMB) has reported a rise in armed attacks against vessels in Western Africa, with 22 incidents recorded in Nigeria alone this year! Worldwide there has been a reported 66 incidents so far this year, with 11 of the vessels being fired upon!
This highlights how Piracy and Hijacking of ships is still prominent within the Global Shipping Industry, and it's more important than ever that ship owners and managers prepare themselves for future incidents.
What Can We Do To Help?
SG Safety Film is an anti-explosion film that fits directly to the surface of the window glass, it is designed to make glass safer by strengthening it against breakage. It does this by holding dangerous shards of shattered glass together in one mass (in situations where glass breakage occurs). The film protects the glass from explosion damage, bullet penetration and manual attacks.
